Mantra Medicine

Mantra meditation is one of the most common forms of meditation worldwide and has been used for thousands of years, all over the world and in many civilizations. Mantra practice involves the repetition of a specific sound, word or phrase which can be spoken or sung and can be recited aloud or silently. Very simple to practice, mantra meditation aims to increase self-awareness and self-regulate the mind and body. The sound or vibration is the most important aspect of the mantra’s effect on cognitive and emotional functioning and therefore the language or sound is a very important part of the practice. Although singing repetitively in any language has its benefits, singing in ancient languages may be more effective. It is said that the vibrations of the original mantras in Sanskrit are designed to get our mind vibrating at the same frequency of nature helping us to connect to ourselves and our environment. This is something that must be experienced by the practitioner of mantra as this is beyond the current framework of science. However, the current scientific framework supports the idea that practicing mantras can promote many health benefits including:

· Neurological effects

· Activates Parasympathetic Nervous System

· Decreases stress and anxiety

· Decreases depressive symptoms

· Increases positive mood

· Increases feelings of relaxation

· Increases focused attention
