About Me
As a teacher, researcher, presenter and writer, my goal is to share the science of ancient practices as a tool for healing. Due to the dramatic impact these practices have had in my own life, the most important thing to me has become sharing them with you!
I am currently dedicated to scientifically investigating and sharing the benefits of mantra meditation and love sharing both the art and science of this technique through workshops, seminars and writing for people of all backgrounds and experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is chanting?
Chanting is a technique used by many traditions to decrease stress, enhance mindfulness, and alter states of consciousness. Chanting can slow our breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system helping us feel more focused and less stressed. Watch the Video
2. What is Mantra?
The word mantra is a Sanskrit word which comes from “manas,” or mind, and “tra” which is truth, liberation or tool. So, by using mantra as a tool we can experience our true mind and be liberated from our prior conditioning. Mantra meditation involves the repetition of a specific sound, word or phrase which can be spoken or sung and can be recited aloud or silently. Watch the Video
3. Is there a different impact of chanting aloud vs silently?
Yes, there are some differences between chanting aloud and chanting silently. Both can offer distinct benefits depending on your experience level and intention. In Dr Gemma Perry’s research, it was found that vocal chanting tends to produce stronger immediate effects on mood and social connection, particularly for those new to the practice. Silent chanting (mentally repeating a mantra/sound), on the other hand, requires deeper internal focus and may be more suitable for experienced meditators.
4. Can mantra meditation decrease symptoms of stress?
Research shows that mantra meditation decreases physiological and psychological stress, as indicated in cortisol levels measured before and after chanting sessions. There is also evidence to suggest chanting can increase positive mood and feelings of connection that can help combat depressive symptoms. Access research on the effects of chanting on stress and anxiety
5. Can humming boost brain and immune health?
Yes! Humming can support both brain function and immune health by stimulating the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating the parasympathetic nervous system; the system responsible for rest, repair, and digestion. Please watch our video on How to boost your immune and brain health by humming
6. How can mantra meditation help with attention issues such as ADHD?
Evidence-based approaches such as mantra meditation, breath awareness, and sound-based practices have shown improved focus attention. Read the research paper
7. How can mantra meditation help with trauma or someone experiencing PTSD?
Research shows that a regular mantra meditation practice can decrease PTSD symptoms.
8. Do you offer sound meditation workshops for corporate workplaces?
Yes, the sound based programs at drgemmaperry.com.au are designed to help workplaces strengthen social connection and enhance team performance through evidence-based sound and group mantra practices. Available online or onsite at your workplace. View our courses: Corporate Chanting for workplace connection. View this example sound meditation workshop outline.
9. How can I access your research on chanting and the science of sound?
The latest research on chanting and sound-based contemplative practices is an exciting area for health professionals and individuals exploring their own personal mantra practice for wellbeing. All of Gemma’s research is available on the Mantra Research page of this website.
10. Does it matter what words or sounds you chant?
Certain mantras—especially those from languages such as Sanskrit—have been used for centuries and are believed to carry specific vibrational qualities that influence us on a physiological, psychological and spiritual level. But, with different sounds, it depends on what you’re measuring. Humming or extended mmmm sounds can stimulate nitric oxide production (through their vibratory effect), which supports respiratory and sinus health. On the other hand, more complex mantras may support vocal articulation, making them potentially useful in voice therapy. This is a fascinating area and we have new studies currently underway. Join us for an online chanting course to learn about chanting different sounds to produce different benefits.
11. How do I start a mantra meditation practice?
Starting a mantra meditation practice can be simple and deeply rewarding. You don’t need any special equipment or experience—just a quiet space, a comfortable seat, and a willingness to be present. If you are ready to start your first mantra meditation practice visit our online chanting page, or read the e-book “Meditation for busy people with busy minds” which includes audio practices to start your first mantra meditation session.
